Last Stop - Machu Picchu

One van, one bus and one train and there we were at Machu Picchu. We had a great 3-hour tour with a very knowledgeable guide who used the words “hypothesis” and “theory” a lot, which is to say that not much is known about this place other than (1) it never got finished because the Spanish invaded Peru with the goal of obliterating Incan culture and killing or enslaving the people, which proved to be a bit of a distraction for any ongoing construction projects, (2) it may have been a palace or a university or some kind of religious center or maybe something else, and (3) someone brought some llamas up here a few decades ago and never brought them back down so now their offspring just live here.

The scenery is incredible and it was definitely worth the effort to get here.

Over the next two days as we make our way back home, we will say goodbye to the:

Bargain-priced firewood

       Edible (I hope) Peruvian flowers

Incan hairless dogs (yes, that’s really a thing)

Homemade Jello treats that you can buy on the street if you’re really desperate for some Jello.

Endless rows of hat stores all selling the same hats.

Martha’s Peruvian watercolor projects

Hasta la proxima.
